What is gum disease?
Gum disease is an inflammatory disease that affects the gums and all tissues that support the teeth. Gum diseases are responsible for most tooth loss, especially in adults. These diseases should be diagnosed at an early stage.
What is the cause of gum disease?
Gum disease is caused by a sticky and colorless film called bacterial dental plaque, which accumulates on the surface of the teeth. With daily oral and dental care, dental plaque can be removed. If plaque is not removed from the teeth, it turns into a permeable structure called tartar or tartar. Over time, the gingiva moves away from the tooth and a periodontal pocket is formed. Thus, the bacteria progress to deeper tissues. Afterwards, the pocket gradually gets deeper, the bacteria progresses to the bone, and destruction is observed in the alveolar bone that supports the tooth.
What are the symptoms of gum disease?
Bleeding teeth and gums while brushing
Swollen, red and sensitive gums,
Inflammatory discharge between the teeth and gums,
Teeth that wobble or move away from each other over time,
Intermittent or split teeth
Relationship disorder between upper and lower teeth,
bad breath
Some gum diseases can progress without symptoms. For this reason, it is possible to get rid of this problem with regular dental check-ups.
Gum disease treatment
If gum disease is treated at an early stage, the damage to the teeth will be minimized. Daily oral care will be sufficient for a successful treatment by cleaning calculus, preventing plaque and ensuring a smooth root surface.
In more advanced cases of gum disease, surgical treatment may be required. At the surgical stage, it is aimed to clean the calculus in the deep periodontal pockets that completely surround the teeth and to provide a smooth root surface.
After gingival treatment, it is necessary for patients to visit the dentist regularly, to control plaque and to prevent the formation of new tartar.
More gingival appearance than normal
In the problem called Gummy Smile, it is the case that the gums appear more than the normal amount during smiling. The intervention technique is determined by the physician, taking into account the amount of appearance of the gums and the periodontal condition of the teeth. Treatment techniques include changing the gingival tissues as much as possible or taking the lip down a little bit.
Both procedures applied are performed under local anesthesia in a very short time.
